SCIENCE 1 -- Research an Astronaut!

As we kick off our unit on space, I thought it would be fun to learn about being an astronaut. Using the links below, find the answers to the questions on your Astronaut Research handout.

SCIENCE 1 -- Phases of the Moon Webquest

Introduction
The Moon changes shape every day. Sometimes you can see only part of the Moon. Other times, you can see the entire Moon. Why does this happen?
The purpose of this WebQuest is to help you learn why we see phases of the Moon.
Tasks
Your task is to explain why the Moon changes appearance throughout the month. You will complete five tasks.

Use your worksheet to record what you learn.   It will help you understand why the Moon's appearance changes.

Moon PhasesThe First Task
Complete the Task One on your worksheet. Draw and name eight important phases of the Moon. You will...
  • Draw the eight Moon phases.
  • Write the correct name of these phases.
Process
Watch this video to help you.

Here are some websites you can use to complete Task One.

The Second Task
Science has special terms. You need to know what these terms mean. For Task Two, define the following terms: gibbous, waning, and waxing. You will identify which phases are waxing and waning.

Process
Get the definitions of the terms at this webpage.

The Third Task
For Task Three, draw your birthday Moon. What phase was it on the day you were born? Find out and fill in the circle. Also, draw a picture of the phase of the Moon on your 2013 birthday

Process
Use this website. Select your birthdate.

The Fourth Task
How does the Moon change during the month? For Task Four, complete the Task Four worksheet. See how the Moon changes each day. Complete the worksheet for January 2016.

Process
Go the website below.  Select the current month and year.

The Fifth Task
For Task Five, show the position of the Earth, Moon, and Sun at each of the eight phases.

Process
Use the websites below to complete the worksheet identifying the correct phase and draw a picture of that phase of the Moon.

Science 1 -->Metamorphosis

As we jump into studying about animal life cycles I wanted to give you the opportunity to learn about different insects (animals) that go through incomplete and complete metamorphosis.

First Assignment-- Metamorphosis Activity:
Use the website link below to learn about different insects and their life cycles. Then complete your activity sheet. You have a week to complete this activity.
http://www.mrsscienceteacher.com/Metamorphosis/Metamorphosis.html

Due:
Tuesday, October 27

Format:
Complete the activity sheet you were given in class. If you have misplaced it you can print another from engrade.

Second Assignment--Manduca Caterpillar Lab:
Use the link below to enter a Virtual Lab for the Manduca Caterpillar experiment.

Due:
Tuesday, October 27

Format:
The handout that you were given in class has your directions and your data table. We will be graphing your data during class on October 27, so be sure to bring your handout back to class!

Science 3 -- Oceanography Links

Good day! This is your one-stop for all the web activity that you'll be doing during our Oceanography Unit. Sometimes you will be doing the job of Marine Biologist, and sometimes you'll be acting more like an Oceanographer. Do a little research and find out what each of those jobs are. Complete the Oceanography Jobs page in your Oceanography Log.

Marine Biologist                                           Physical Oceanographer

Click here for the online dictionary for your vocabulary words. Remember, any words not defined in the dictionary will be in your Oceanography Log "Our Oceans".

STRANGE CREATURE identification:

Click the link below to view the strange animals that have washed up on shore.
(Don't be confused by the directions on the individual websites. You are only 'dropping in' to receive information. Your instructions will come from your Oceanography Log and from class.)

Unidentified animals

Your job is to identify at the three unidentified animals that you have been assigned and give the following information for each:
--> what zone each animal came from
--> possible prey (must live in the same zone)
--> possible predators (must live in the same zone)
--> adaptations (how their physical traits and behaviors allow them to survive in their zone)

***Don't Google your animal! The purpose of this activity is to see how closely you can assess where your creatures might live based on what you're learning.***

FIRST, you need to learn about the zones:
Use the links below to fill out your Ocean Zone Notes from your Oceanography Log.
